Federal, provincial and territorial company registries are responsible for approving company and business names under the applicable legislation. Sometimes, however, a proposed name may include words that are restricted by other legislation in Canada.
For example, your proposed name may contain a word whose use is restricted by the
Bank Act, the
Insurance Companies Act or the
Trust and Loan Companies Act. If you wish to seek OSFI’s approval to use a restricted word in a name, please complete the application form and submit it to OSFI. For more information, see the “frequently asked questions" (FAQ).
